Renewables & ESS Group

Fields of our research Energy New Business Renewables & ESS Group

Renewables & ESS Group carries out research on offshore wind power, energy storage systems (ESS), and fuel cell technology. The group also plays an important role in the commercialization of renewable energy technology including planning and construction of facilities, operational technology development, and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology development, among others.

Wind Farm Development Technology

Wind farm development technology is a prerequisite technology for selecting the optimal site for wind power, for designing an efficient wind farm lay-out, and for improving the social acceptance of wind power and the research topics are on wind resource analysis, economic evaluation of wind power potential, layout design of wind turbines, long-term environmental monitoring, and co-location of fisheries with offshore wind farms.

ESS Operations Planning, Economic Evaluation, and Commercialization Technology

We perform research on ESS modeling, on frequency regulation and renewable energy stabilization with ESS, and on the development and commercialization of core ESS technologies. Other R&D activities of the team include economic analysis and database construction, Biz model development and standardization, and Biz strategies for the expansion of ESS applications.

ESS Engineering Technology

We continuously develop our technical expertise in designing technical specifications, in designing ESS protection systems and power conditioning systems (PCS), and in providing consultation services for ESS installation and operation. In July 2015, the team completed a 28- and 24-MW grid-connected ESS demonstration project for frequency regulation at Shin-Yongin and Seo-Anseong substations.

Flexible AC Transmission Technology

We developed a flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) technology that maintains stable operation of the power system. Continuous increase in the demand for power and in the number of remote power plants is properly managed with power flow control and improved power plant utilization through FACTS.

ESS Operation Technology

We developed an ESS control and operation model for 52-MW frequency regulation ESS pilot project in 2015. Following its success, seven additional ESS facilities with a total capacity of 184MW were installed at 2016 and four additional ESS facilities with a total capacity of 140MW were installed at 2017. Currently, total 376MW ESS for the frequency regulation have been installed at 13 substations and is in commercial operation.
The team is committed in its efforts to develop ESS control and operation technologies such as the performance and safety evaluation and the status diagnosis of ESS facilities in order to operate ESS more efficiently and reliably during life of ESS facilities.
