Our Smart Power Distribution Laboratory is developing various application services by introducing innovative ICT to lead the 4th Industrial Revolution, while leading the way to create new values for Digital KEPCO, as well. Especially, the laboratory is engaged in developing promising future technologies in power distribution by introducing new technologies from various fields including power distribution, ICT, structure, and software. For this, the laboratory is focusing on landmark projects of a large scale, as well as innovative new technologies such as the platform technologies to run the distribution grids, AI applications, AR/VR visualization technology, and the SW technologies for new businesses combined with power technology know-how. Above all, the lab is opening the door to the era of new services of futuristic power distribution systems using advanced technologies such as which intelligent distribution automation, distribution equipment status inference, AMI, EMS, DC distribution systems which internalize IoT smart sensors, AI, AR/VR/3D imaging technologies, robots and drones, along with high value-added technologies with openness, convergence, standardization, and SW.

Full Life-Cycle R&D SW Development and Quality Control

The IT technology sector includes into cloud/distributed computing, SW process standardization, SW testing/evaluation, SW information protection, and SW component technologies. The institute has an open R&D platform that supports the entire R&D life-cycle resources and processes as a whole, along with the SW quality center. Also, the institute has developed and opened the SW components related to electric power, with a view to provide an environment where the latest R&Ds can be utilized and the application technologies can be developed easily, eventually contributing to advancing the power industry SW.

Establishment of a New Power Distribution System and Development of the Operation Technology

The power distribution sector has embraced the dispersed generation technology using photovoltaic panels, wind power, and power storage systems. Also, we are developing new technologies and demonstrating them so that the digital loads and DC loads can be accommodated. The laboratory is also developing protection coordination technologies for the power grids that are connected to the renewable energy sources, smart-grid interoperability, and EMS application technology.

Power ICT, Information Security R&D and Certification Tests

The field of ICT can be divided into IoT, security, communication, and AMI technologies. Especially, many active R&D projects are in progress for IoT Standardization and Platform development. Also, smart grid security solution application technologies, power system visual synchronization technologies, and AMI security technologies as well as the national certification technologies are being developed. In addition, the lab is developing EMP defense technologies for the power infrastructure in line with the government's national infrastructure defense policy.

Mid/Long-term Study Planning and Execution of Power Distribution

Innovative ICT technologies are developing fast, and we are having new technologies in a neck breaking speed. We have established a mid/long-term R&D plan to secure the future power distribution technologies, while we actively plan and execute large-scale projects. For this, we are developing the AI-based power distribution resource management technology using the latest AI technologies, big data, IoT, mobile technologies; the power distribution equipment management technology using the latest visualization technologies such as AR or VR; and exo-skeleton robot technologies to help workers who work on the distribution infrastructure. With this, we are leading the way to the 4th Industrial Revolution and convergence to lead the innovation in the field of power distribution, while preparing for the changes in the power distribution system environment.

Standardization of the New Electric Power Technologies and Development of Platforms

As we are having an increasing number of new technologies for power distribution, the number of standardization and validation studies for these new technologies is on the rise, as well. For this, the Comprehensive Test Bed in Gochang Power Test Center is being expanded and upgraded, so that the new electric power technologies that is converged with the power distribution system of the future can be defined clearly.
The ICT standardization technology sector concerns the technology that secures the leadership in the areas where new markets are expected, defines the standard model for this purpose, and validates such a practical model. Especially, the lab is defining detailed technical standard to develop the frameworks for the IoT, which is the fundamental technology for the 4th Industrial Revolution, secure interpretabilities through standardization, and operate a standard platform.

Solving Field Issues and Providing Technical Support to Overseas projects.

In order to enhance the reliability of power supply, the lab is engaged in field technical support on a continued basis. And, it has been providing support for field equipment for overseas projects involving the AMI Technology.
Also, the lab has been providing technical support for efficient operation of equipment, such as monitoring, diagnostics, system analysis, lighting earthing and other field issues as well as the safety issues for the grid equipment, to support customer services through the highest power quality.
