Service life evaluation through a comprehensive close diagnosis of a compound power station

The Specialized Technology Center provided technical support for the evaluation of service life during a comprehensive close diagnosis for the key equipment during the planned preventive maintenance period for Boryung Compound Power Station. The team conducted a field inspection and reviewed/analyzed the results. They utilized various diagnosis methods including a theoretical analysis utilizing the software owned by the institute in order to perform the final service life evaluation for each piece of equipment. The field diagnosis revealed that there was a penetrating crack in the casing of the steam turbine, which was advised to be fixed by the team. Overall, the entire equipment maintained a relatively good condition considering how long they have been in operation.

Contracted investigation of the cause of a compressor blade accident in a privately-owned power station

The Specialized Technology Center was commissioned by its client to perform a technical investigation service for an accident where the entire R0 of a gas turbine compressor in a privately-owned power station. This accident caused the client to suspend the operation for 10 days (1 billion won in loss) and costed it 800 million won for replacing the damaged parts. The analysis of the forms of the damages on the blade showed that the moisture froze up during the winter and dislodged to hit the blade, which caused the accident. The team recommended countermeasures to prevent similar accidents caused by ice based on the results of the investigation and analyses, which contributed to the enhancement of the equipment reliability significantly.

Technical support to address an electrical breakdown of the coils of a power generator

The Specialized Technology Center provided technical support to identify the cause of the electric breakdown. The power generator in question triggered the ground relay that stopped the generator. In response, the center provided a rapid technical support to identify an electrical breakdown at the coil of the stator. The down time was shortened through the use of a backup coil. The cause of this malfunction was the total blockage of the curved section of the cooling water channel of the coil caused by a foreign object. The blockage caused a rapid increase in the temperature of the coil that expanded and caused a crack on the insulator which developed into an electric breakdown. A close analysis of the coil showed that the blockage happened at around 60% of the cooling water channel.

Planned performance evaluation for Ilihan Compound Power Station #1, 2 BLOCK (Overseas project)

The Specialized Technology Center provided technical support for the precision thermal performance evaluation for No. 1 and 2 blocks of Ilihan Compound Power Station, the Philippines. This was a performance evaluation to confirm the compound power output and heat consumption ratio, which are guaranteed in the contract. Yet, another purpose of this evaluation was to identify the items for future performance enhancement to optimize the operation of the power generation equipment. The test was successfully conducted with the personnel of NPC, the power company of the Philippines, present, in order to perform a cross-check for all parameters of the operations, including the soundness of the operating conditions and data values.
